Essential Resources on Missional Church

by Krish Kandiah

1.    The Church between Gospel and Culture, George R. Hunsberger and Craig Van Gelder ed, Eerdmans

This contains some important work by some eminent thinkers in the USA who were inspired by Lesslie Newbigin's cultural engagement, and provides very helpful rethinking of the nature of church in light of 21st century challenges.

2.   The Provocative Church, Graham Tomlin, SPCK

This is a very readable book from a great thinker and church historian. Graham writes with passion and the book leaves its readers encouraged and inspired to mission.

3.    Quitting Church, Julia Duin, Baker

This is a helpful summary of the challenges and some good practice from the USA. Julia brings a really helpful perspective as the religion editor for a major US newspaper and a single mother. Not all her conclusions are helpful, but it is extremely well written.

4.    Liquid Church, Pete Ward, Paternoster

Another book where I would not agree with the solutions, but the analytical parts of this book are excellent and worth hearing.

5.    Total Church, Tim Chester, IVP

If you are planting a church or rethinking church from scratch, this is a great book to read with a very different picture of what a local church could look like. (It's not much help if you are in a traditional form of church though)

6.    The Search to Belong, J.R. Meyers, Zondervan

This book spells out a very interesting concept of the church occupying the third space (between the private life of home and the public life of work) and is worth a ponder in connection with the idea of church and mission.
